“Teaching” phonics is challenging and teaching it to preschool learners requires skills, patience, appropriate and strategic reading instructions that can help and build the students confidents to read correctly.
One of the common challenge is how to make our teaching in a playful setting, fun and enjoyable manner but able to optimise the young learners learning of “reading”.
Young learners are attracted to vivid colours, cartoons, sounds that makes them more attentive and engaged to what they are learning. Windows 8 and its app can help that.
Using application such as Paint and Windows 8’s Fresh Paint, it enable students to be creative and engaged in their “recognising” the phonic sounds. How?
Activity 1: First: You’ll need a computer with a touchscreen monitor or a laptop with a touchscreen or Windows tablet.
Second: Start up paint application or fresh paint (which are already built in Windows 8 by default)
Third: Teacher Instruction; You can use pre-recorded sound file which contain the phonics’ sound or you can simply use your own teaching voice to give instruction. Tell the students that you will play a sound or say a sound of a letter and they are required to draw the letter on their touch screen.
By doing this activity, you can also monitor students’ progress on their phonemic awareness and recognition of the letter sounds.
To young learners, what can be more fun than drawing letters on a computer with a touchscreen interface while using their own fingers as a writing tool?!
